Drew Conway and John Myles White of the website Dataists decided to try ranking programming languages using a new system: the size of the community and the number of projects. In Conway's blog post about the results, he admits that there's no perfect way to find data about either measure. He and Myles settled on using the number of questions in StackOverflow as a measure of the community and the number of projects in Github as a measure of the number of projects.
Notably, the ranks from (...)

Any web designer in any level of experience, must be started at some point in life as a new comer. A new comer has almost no experience in the field, and it is nothing to be ashamed of! BUT they have survived the problems of a new comer, they have contributed to web design as a whole, and are now recognized professionals!

Google CEO Eric Schmidt wrote a blog post today about why the network computer failed and how cloud computing has made it possible to support a Web-based operating system.
Schmidt calls the announcement of the Chrome OS notebook earlier this week one of the most important developments of his working life. He says the news is testament to the advancement of computer science that allows developers to use lightweight tools supported by complex back-end systems to create products and services (...)

Documentation is like gift wrapping. It seems like superfluous fluff, but your family tends to be rather disappointed when their presents arrive in supermarket carrier bags, so you have to feign some sort of attempt at making your gift look enticing. Documentation doesn’t have to be all hard work and sellotaping yourself to a table – you can make it useful and relevant.
Documentation gets a pretty rough deal. It tends to get left until the end of a project, when some poor developer is (...)

The other day I saw the announcement for the new Chrome OS test laptop and decided to sign up on the off-chance that I might be able to snag one. In the request form I made it very clear that I would be attempting to use this laptop for development (easily my primary activity). Surprisingly the laptop arrived this morning and I've been having fun putting it through its paces.
(Note: There doesn't appear to be a way to take screenshots of the Chrome OS UI - making this post a bit less (...)

Curated.by has quickly become a new addiction for me (as if I needed another). In just the short amount of time that I've been a member of the site, I have discovered many useful Internet and social media tools and apps. The idea behind Curated.by is to make it easier to find "the good stuff" on Twitter. The goal of the site is "to help where a Twitter list or hashtag search is just not good enough."
As a member and curator of the site, your job is to put website links together in what (...)

This blog post is a version of Eric’s talk at our Chrome event on Tuesday, December 7, 2010. You can watch his talk on YouTube. - Ed.
On Tuesday, we announced a number of updates to Chrome and Chrome OS. For me, these announcements were among the most important of my working life—demonstrating the real power of computer science to transform people’s lives. It’s extraordinary how very complex platforms can produce beautifully simple solutions like Chrome and Chrome OS, which anyone can use from (...)

For a while now, here on Smashing Magazine, we have taken notice of how many designers are reluctant to embrace the new technologies such as CSS3 or HTML5 because of the lack of full cross-browser support for these technologies. Many designers are complaining about the numerous ways how the lack of cross-browser compatibility is effectively holding us back and tying our hands — keeping us from completely being able to shine and show off the full scope of our abilities in our work. Many (...)

One of the highlights of D: Dive Into Mobile was getting a few minutes to see RIM’s forthcoming PlayBook tablet in action. However, from there, things seemed to go downhill for CEO Mike Lazaridis.
According to the overwhelming consensus of both pundits and many of those in the room, Lazaridis’s talk left people even more skeptical that RIM truly is prepared to respond to the threat posed by Android and the iPhone.
Despite the rough going on stage, Lazaridis was kind enough to talk with (...)
