Custom post types add a level of flexibility to WordPress that makes this open-source Web development platform more useful on many levels. Whenever I have been faced with a Web-based task, especially one that involves organizing information, the first thing I do is examine WordPress to determine if it can handle the job. It usually can.

Hands and fingers are the greatest assets of every human born in this world. With hands and fingers, human created great arts that shine in the human history. They are really great, but can they be artistic as well? It’s hard to answer this kind of questions with a ‘no’, especially in this technological age, when everything can possibly become an art with the might of creativity and the power of the Photoshop.

A great personal branding exercise that's been inspired by the industrial branding of the past.
I really like the typeface and the way the orange works on the white background.
This design was featured on the Saturday 28th of January 2012. It falls under the category of Logo, and has a layout style of Other.

I recently ran into a problem that was really hard to figure out. I was working on a responsive design where I used img max-width:100%; to make sure that images would be downsized rather than overflow in narrower viewports.
It worked great everywhere… until I went to check in IE8. The site’s logo was gone! None of the usual IE bug fixes cured the problem, and it took me quite a while to realise that max-width was part of the problem.

Recently over at StudioPress we released the eleven40 Theme, which pretty clearly took inspiration from the custom theme I use here. A few folks have asked if there was a way to add a widget area on the homepage of that theme.
Lucky for you, it’s actually quite easy to pull off. Registering the Widget Area
The first thing you’ll want to do is open up the eleven40′s functions.php file and scroll to the bottom where you’ll see the /** Register widget areas */ note.
After that, go ahead and (...)
CSS pseudo-classes which change styles in response to user actions have been with us for many years. You’ve almost certainly used :hover, :active and :focus; I can (only just) remember the excitement of changing IE4′s link colors back in 1997.
CSS3 also introduced :target; a powerful pseudo-class which can reduce the need for scripting in interactive widgets. Consider a page URL such as http://mysite.com/page#mytarget; an element with the id “mytarget” can have matching :target styles (...)

My book will be aimed at those who are thinking of, or who have started their own design business. The title I wish I’d read a few years ago (although I know I’m going to learn a lot writing this one).
It was going to be called The Business of Design, but it’s already published. Then Nikki suggested Business Designed to tie-in with Identity Designed. Great idea, but someone’s sitting on the domain and my purchase request led to nowt.
Then Bernadette pitched in with these two ideas: Working (...)

I found this SEOmoz post on setting up a search engine-friendly website maintenance page to be very useful, especially as I have a significant website redesign launch coming up.
In the past I've left this aspect of website management in the hands of my network administrator, but who knows if they are aware of the pitfalls of sending the wrong signals to the search engines when your site is down for maintenance. At least now I'll be able to ask the right questions as we approach launch time. (...)

Create a stylized digital signature in Illustrator to drop onto your artwork when you are finished. Use Illustrator’s width tool to add some calligraphy style to your signature.
Previously I wrote two tutorials on how to style the image element with CSS3 inset box-shadow and border-radius. The trick is to wrap the image with a span tag and apply the image as background-image. However, I recently ran into a problem with that trick while designing the PhotoTouch theme. The issue is that the [...]

UIKit’s Shortcomings
From day one, iOS developers have been struggling to alert users about simple warnings and errors that may not interrupt the flow of the app. Popping up UIAlertViews requires the user to click a button to move along, which wasn’t quite necessary for warnings that merely limit useability. Adding a UILabel somewhere on the screen isn’t consistent and doesn’t always look great.
Maybe you just have some more information you want to inform your user about. Simply adding it to (...)

Within the creative community there seems to be an ongoing divide between the realms of digital art, and traditional (non-digital) art. Often traditional art is viewed as somewhat archaic, conjuring images of the Mona Lisa or a Monet landscape. Whilst these masterpieces, and much of traditional art is of course pivotal to our conceptions of art and creativity, there still exists this divide in relation to the digital medium.
The smooth gloss of a photo manipulation has nothing (...)
This promotional video for the upcoming movie “Chronicle” is neat. The marketing team built three remote controlled airplanes that were human-like enough in shape to fool the eye from a distance and flew them over the East River in New York City. The effect is surprisingly effective. Watch the video here.
While entertaining, the video is probably more interesting as an illustration of how to capture “super-human” feats believably on film. The motions in this video are seen from the ground, (...)
For both video games and comic books, concept artists are necessary to create the aesthetically-pleasing visuals that enhance the storyline’s action and drama. From simple pencil sketches to 3D models, detailed character turnarounds to costumes, fantastic vehicles to intricate weapon design, the possibilities are endless.
These are some examples of impressive video game and comic book concept art.

Community Manager Appreciation Day 2012
This week, community managers everywhere participated in the third annual Community Manager Appreciation Day (also known as CMAD)! Now, while some of you may be thinking “oh no, not another made up holiday”, let me explain why Community Manager Appreciation Day is such a wonderful holiday to celebrate.
First of all, I’m sure all of you know at least one Community Manager. Whether you work with them, are friends with them, or interact with them through (...)
Flywheel started with a simple idea… make indoor cycling epic.
To make that happen Flywheel partnered with Ammirati (the agency where I currently work) who re-imagined the Flywheel brand experience. A bold, new look enforced by striking photography & solid copywriting was implemented across all facets of the Flywheel brand, including the Flywheel website which I had the pleasure to work on.
Ammirati and I had to restructure, rewrite and redesign all pages of the Flywheel website, for (...)
Madrid launched its bid for the 2020 Olympics yesterday with a logo that left many Spaniards confused (as reported in The Telegraph).
“The design purportedly consists of the letter M for Madrid and the number 20 in front of the coloured rings of the Olympics stylised into arches inspired by the Madrid landmark, Puerta de Alcalá.
“But the lettering appears to show “20020,” an effect that has brought much derision in the Spanish press and on social networking sites.”
The design is a result of a (...)
I prescribe to the slow and steady approach in life. It’s a proven methodology in becoming succesful (just ask the Tortoise and/or the Hare). However, slow and steady is typically not acceptable in data computation, and SQL is no different. Thus, MySQL provides a Slow Query Log.
Do you use the slow query log? Let us know your tips/stories in the comments section.
The long_query_time parameter in your MySQL configuration becomes the baseline for which queries will end up in your slow query (...)

Whether or not there is a consumer tablet market at all, beyond the iPad, is still up for debate but in enterprise Microsoft is still a powerhouse. With the decline of RIM and the inability of Android to gain any serious traction I have long been an advocate of the rise of Windows in the mobile space. However, they do seem to be leaving it a little late. iPad for enterprise is a call which is being raised with increased vigour and so the question needs to be asked; is apple about to take (...)

With a mobile-first responsive design approach, if any part of the process breaks down, your user can still receive a representative image and avoid an unnecessarily large request on a device that may have limited bandwidth. But with several newer browsers implementing an “image prefetching” feature that allows images to be fetched before parsing the document’s body, some of the web's brightest developers are abandoning responsive images in favor of user agent detection, at least as a (...)
One of the criticisms of microdata is that it requires you add new attributes to HTML elements. This is both more to learn, and risks causing problems for people who need to write valid HTML. Microformats are a way to add this data to your web pages using the existing tags and attributes that you already know.

The exposed surface of an application is often called its "attack surface" or "defensive perimeter". I prefer "exposed surface" since the term is a little less judgemental and I think better implies why we need to be careful about it.
Remember that many security weaknesses come about due to unexpected functionality existing, as well as implementation and design flaws. The number of weaknesses is generally proportional to complexity, often measured as lines of code, or in the context of (...)

About a week and a half ago, Matt Cutt’s posted to the Google Webmaster Central blog, about an algorithmic change that considers the layout of a webpage, particularly what appears “above the fold” as a signal in where the page should rank.
