Things are going from bad to worse for Paul Ceglia, the small time con artist who a year ago had the press and investors at the edge of their seats with his tale of a contract from Mark Zuckerberg that gave him control of Facebook.
One week after a judge ordered Ceglia to pay Facebook $75,766 in legal bills, a new court filing shows he created a “getzuck@gmail.com” account and created a “pitch” document to shop his lawsuit around.
The gmail account was unearthed by a digital forensic firm (...)
Some of you may have noticed a rather obtrusive, large font, full-width section that sits at the top of my website. It’s on every page, screams in your face and is relatively hard to ignore.
I’d like to introduce you to my Welcome Text Widget.
And in case you missed it, it’s the thing that sits just below my header, above my content area and says:
Self-confessed Starbucks addict from the suburbs of Chicago.
Now you know what I’m talking about? How to Fetch You Some Welcome Text Widget

There are differing opinions in our field when it comes to the fine line between using a website or idea as inspiration and blatant copyright infringement.
Some feel that getting inspired by other designs and utilizing elements of them in your own is completely natural, even necessary. Others argue that copying anything, even a fairly generic layout structure, is copyright infringement.
No matter which side you’re on, you can’t help but notice copycats in almost every successful new web (...)

Today, Adobe released their 5th sneak peek video that explains what they are working on for the next version of Photoshop. This sneak peek shows off several new features including the ability to share your presets between computers, as well as some enhancements to the layer panel. In this article, we will take a look at some of these announcements and analyze them to see what they mean for you. Let’s take a look!

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a blog post on how freelancers can tackle projects like a software developer using a trend in software development called “Agile”, which calls for compressing development projects into short pieces.
Well I found another article, this time at The 99%, that calls for the benefits of working in small time blocks. Do you put off starting a project because you are waiting for the perfect time to do so? Guess what? There is no perfect time! Putting off starting a (...)
During today's quarterly conference call, Meg Whitman admitted that HP has some big cost cutting in front of it.
"Our current cost base isn't sustainable," she said. "For years we've been running our business in silos. But it's too complex and too slow."
Although she said that the "obvious costs were dealt with in recent years" she will be looking for ways that the company can "standardize, optimize and automate many of our systems."
That's an ironic need for a company that sells (...)
Over the weekend my family took a short trip by plane. The experience of flying — which I never enjoy — was so bad, it made me despair again for this incompetent industry that we all seem to be stuck with but have little recourse from. The ineptitudes of nearly every airline’s customer experience just boggle the mind and make me marvel at the fact that they can even exist as businesses. Proposal for an Amazing New Business
How outlandish would it be, it made me wonder, if you tried to get a (...)

For designers, many photos that are provided by clients will need some touch ups to get the best look possible.

Web typography used to be the Cinderella of design until about 2010. Not many websites dared to venture outside the safe area of Georgia and Verdana because the tools available for doing so forced too many major compromises. Times are changing, however, and with the global adoption of CSS @font-face, along came a burst in the tools supporting and diversity of web fonts. (...)
There used to be a time when paintings were accomplished only by putting brush on canvas. However, with the growth of technology, all genres of art evolved with time. Today, digital paintings have emerged as a wonderful category of art — one that combines both precision and enigma.
In this article, we take a look at some stunning digital paintings. All of these capture still life at its best! The amount of detail contained within each of these paintings is sure to inspire anyone.

Promises are an exciting jQuery feature that make it a breeze to manage async events. They allow you to write clearer, shorter callbacks and keep high-level application logic separate from low-level behaviors.
Once you understand Promises, you’ll want to use them for everything from AJAX calls to UI flow. That’s a promise!
Understanding Promises
Once a Promise is resolved or rejected, it’ll remain in that state forever.
A Promise is an object that represents a one-time event, typically (...)

PageScroller is a slick jQuery plugin for scrolling web pages nicely and smoothly.
It is a very flexible plugin, can integrate into any page easily and auto-create a navigation that sits in the sidebars or at the top.
Clicking each navigation item ends up in a scrolling that gets the user to the related section.
The plugin can also display top and bottom arrows for browsing through the sections one-by-one.
There are several customization option including the (...)

A lot of time and energy is required to build mobile iOS/Android apps. Aside from the coding and UI design you need to plan functionality ahead of time. This way you can start programming immediately and implement key features without a hassle.
The best way to start off a mobile application is through wireframing. This is a design process where you lay out each of the app’s views in detail. This could be just a rough sketch, but many designers will spend time going that extra step. (...)

Whether it’s an old friend, a former classmate or (ahem) yourself, searching for people is one of the most common things we do on the web. Last year, we took the first step to bring expanded search results of your Facebook friends into Bing, making it easier to find friends and friends of friends more quickly.
With people search being such a high volume pastime, we're taking it a step further letting you have more control in how you show up on Bing. Beginning today, with Linked Pages, (...)
If your job or company revolves around online marketing, and you’ve always wanted to see Bryan Eisenberg in action, the keynote alone is worth the small price of this year’s eMarketing Conference at Fanshawe College in London, ON. Advertising business products/services is one of the most important aspects of any company. They always look for highly creative people, who have great ideas for marketing and skills to materialize them into a mind blowing visual ads, in order to run their marketing campaigns effectively. As far as the scope of outdoor advertising is concerned, (...)
In a little less than 6 hours, Twitter will officially have 500 million registered users. This estimate is only slightly off from the projections made last month; on January 13, Twopcharts calculated that Twitter would hit the watermark on Valentine’s Day. Being only eight days off still doesn’t really change anything in this arbitrary speculation: Twitter is going to amass 500 million users. And that’s a lot.
As of writing this, the total amount of registered users are 499,787,589 (the (...)
When it comes to designing a new web site, most beginning and unaware designers only care about how amazing the site will be.
Often times as designers, we can take off with a crazy idea for a site design and it ends up jam packed with design on top of design on top of design. Unfortunately, some of us don’t always consider one of the most important purposes of the site: to be found so that it can deliver content.
I mean, let’s be honest. How many people are putting up web sites just for the (...)
Twilight’s on its final run. Harry Potter has flown out of the theaters. What’s next? The Hunger Games. And, people are scouring Yahoo! for anything they can find out about the upcoming movie.
Did you know?: Of the total searches on Yahoo! this year (past 365) for The Hunger Games, Twilight Breaking Dawn: Part I, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II, The Hunger Games has gotten 42% of the total number of searches.
People often say, “the book was better than the movie,” and (...)

The Internet is flooded with too many blogs. It probably doesn’t need yours.
It’s not that you don’t have anything to say—you probably do. And it’s not that you couldn’t develop an audience, or eventually monetize that audience—you probably could. It’s definitely not that you’re not smart enough. There are plenty of people less intelligent than you already killing it online.
Unfortunately, it’s no longer 2007. There are now millions of blogs. (...)
A new feature in Adobe Edge Preview 4 is the use of Symbols. Those users coming from Flash will recognize symbols and how they are used. Tom goes over how to convert a graphic to a symbol, edit it in place, animate the symbol using keyframes and the timeline.
So, you’re heading on your own as an SEO consultant. Welcome to our weird little club!
Before you start, you might want to make sure you’ve got: Knowledge. I really, really hope I don’t have to point this out. But you need strong knowledge of SEO: Far more than you can get in a few months at an SEO shop or from a single book. Work at an SEO company, or in-house with a good mentor, for at least a year. Two would be better. Four would be great. Or, learn the hard way by building and optimizing (...)

You might have seen all the people beating up on Path about two weeks ago. But that really is pretty benign behavior, in my experience, when compared to companies, like Glassmap, who really are hurting the entire app economy.
How? I show how in this video.
Glassmap automatically posted to my Facebook feed when I simply started the app up. Yeah, it gave me lots of lame ass warnings but this is crazy behavior that just needs to be stopped.
Who is to blame?
Silicon Valley’s investors. In (...)
Picture three men racing through a tall hedge maze.
The first man runs off and begins following paths randomly, hoping to stumble upon the exit.
The second man is more methodical. He puts one hand on a wall of the maze and resolves to keep moving forward slowly, never taking his hand off the wall. Eventually, thanks to the rules of topology, he knows he’ll find the outside.
The third man pushes and shoves directly through the hedges in a straight line, finishing in thirty seconds flat and (...)
Getting consistent and quality traffic to a blog can be very difficult these days, especially if you are in the weight loss niche.
Most of us would have already heard about guest blogging, especially since it is the talk of the town in the blogosphere today. The majority of us are only familiar with guest blogging being a tactic used to generate traffic to a blog. The process is usually like this; write a quality guest post, submit it to big or medium sized blogs in your niche, expect (...)

Two posts ago, I talked about the importance of laying a web analytics foundation for your company by measuring, valuing and analyzing the critical few visitor behaviors on your site that have an impact on your bottom line. In my last post, I talked about the step after that, which is determine why the data you've collected is the way it is (the why?). Once you've listened to why your customers couldn't complete whatever tasks they were trying to accomplish on (...)
Are you enough of a photo geek to build your own camera? Maybe. But are you enough of one to build it out of LEGO and some spare bits you had lying around the house? Probably not. But Carl-Frederic Salicath over in Norway is. And he did. He calls it the Legoflex B1.
The body of the camera is entirely LEGO: normal bricks for the outside, and some Technic pieces built to hold the 120mm roll film the camera uses. It even has a rewind lock so the film doesn’t unravel or turn the wrong (...)

According to leaked documents, Facebook plans to upgrade its premium ads on February 29. The company expects the new ads to perform 40 to 8o percent better than its previous product.
As the owner of a social creative agency, and as a rapacious buyer of Facebook ads for clients and for marketing my own company, I live for this kind of news. In an age of over-sharing, these documents landed in my inbox with a splash. I am sharing them in the format I received them. I hope you find them useful. (...)
One of the most common ways to gain control of a website, email account, bank account and what not is to have a key logger installed on the computer of the victim. After that everything you type will be saved into a hidden file, and if you are used to typing your passwords to logging into your website, email and bank the attacked will have access to all of them.
The practice of typing passwords is even more dangerous if you use shared computers, for instance where you work or on Internet (...)
465 million. That’s the staggering number of Twitter accounts there are in the world, according to the latest infographic design from Infographic Labs. The infographic takes a look at the current state of things at Twitter, which we can all agree has virtually revolutionized “microblogging”.
Other interesting facts that caught our eye: that celebrity statuses only receive 21% of retweets (“interesting content” leads with 92%), and that there are 11 Twitter accounts created every (...)
Google's daily brainteaser helps hone your search skills.
One of my favorite people in the tech business is Anthony Volodkin, founder and operator of the Hype Machine. Anthony's a media hacker in the greatest sense of the word. He builds apps that allow us to discover and enjoy new things.
And his latest project, really just an experiment, is called Kickstumbler. I found out about it this morning. Think stumbleupon meets kickstarter. Give it a try.
But the coolest thing of all is this linear video version of Kickstumbler. I'm going to point my (...)
I really lucked out after moderating the morning session at SES London on Social Media Tools by joining the SEO Tools of the Trade session that followed. Both sessions had great speakers and I’ve decided to combine my notes for both into one post about social media automation tools and SEO tools.

Microsoft has gone after Google before in ads attacking its search and Gmail products, but today the big M has launched a new off-kilter commercial showing off Google Apps’ biggest weaknesses.

Apperson has 12 years of advertising experience and is meeting with an executive to sell her company Google productivity (...)

As the media landscape becomes increasingly complicated, brands are addressing change on multiple fronts, such as platforms, devices and content creation.

Four classes
Here are the aggregate numbers for the four device classes. I explain them and my methods here. Due to some very small market shares I use tenths of percents here, even though I don’t like it because it suggests a precision that’s not warranted.
In any case, desktop loses a bit of ground, with mobile and tablet picking (...)
I know it's weird to go through slides of a presentation outside of the context of a real talk (and pales in comparison to the experience of being there) but nonetheless, there may be bits of goodness you can extract from them.
[Slides are embedded, come to site to view them or view on SpeakerDeck]
These are my slides from InControl 2012 where I did a talk I called "What We Don't Know" sort of based on this post. Here's the short of it:
On any given request for our website there are (...)
When it comes to design resources, textures and patterns are among some of the most popular tools on offer. And while we may never be able to get a single, definitive answer from the community as to why this is, one can surmise that their popularity is probably due to their extreme usefulness. Their ability to add such richness and depth to otherwise flat website designs with ease, may also factor into that equation.
In fact, one need only look around the web to find some (...)

The continent of North America has a very rich history following the past 300-400 years. The United States has grown from a few small colonies into a large western empire in the modern world. Our culture has grown dynamically in music, theater, and even architecture. American homes have seen decades of growth all under the founded principle of Manifest Destiny.
In this showcase I have put together 40 breathtaking photographs of homes from all over the country. (...)

As you grow older, you learn a few things. One of them is to actually take the time you’ve alloted for vacation. So while the whole Google/Microsoft/Apple privacy who-haa is going down this week, as are any number of other noteworthy news stories, I’m going to stay on the sidelines and focus on skiing with my family. Back at it, to the extent I can be at it while attending TED, next week.
There’s much to be said, for sure. But time only makes the saying of it that much better, I (...)
